Firstly do you have a CRT (cathode ray tube) type, or a flat screen LCD (liquid crystal display) type monitor.
If you are running a CRT type monitor it's quite possible that the colour guns are on their way out and that is not a repairable problem, however if it's because of a curcuit failure, you may be able to get it repaired, however repair of a second hand monitor may exceed the cost of a replacement monitor.

Simply right click on your desktop and select properties, then select settings from the tabs at the top of the display options box see below.

Choose the quality of colour you require, and most programs will adjust automatically from these settings.

I have a question about Use True-Color Icons:
According to the article you need at least a gfx depths of 16 bit to use the true color icons. This worked fine on NT4 and Win2k. Unfortunately on my System XP shows the true color icons only if the gfx depth is set to 32 bit, if I set it to 16 bit the good-old EGA icons are used :-( Is there any way to force XP showing true color icons even with 16 bit gfx depths? The registry trick of the article did not work.
