View Full Version : The Joy of Bandwidth

A few questions about bandwidth, as well as a FileDen Admin question to top it off...

1) If I choose platinum, and have 100gb of monthly bandwidth, and am using MySpace with a custom playlist of 20-30 songs, each time somebody clicks on the song, am I charged the full bandwidth of the size of the song, or only what they listen to? ...and doing the math, if somebody listens to all my songs 5 times a day, and each song is 5mb, that's (30x5)(5), which is 7.5gb -- correct? Which means, if that happened every day, I would be out of bandwidth in 13 days?

2) I also want to have a 370mb video clip (close to 1hr long); now this file will sit stagnant on my MySpace until an individual hits the play button, and once the play button is hit (if it is hit), am I charged the full 370mb bandwidth even if they only watch a portion of it, or am I only charged what loads up on the status bar beneath the video (basically what's already been downloaded and can be viewed)?

3) Finally, do you offer any unlimited bandwidth packages? I'd like less storage space (only need 1-5gb at most, in exchange for more bandwidth?

Hopefully you can answer these questions soon, as I'm trying to get all of this taken care of ASAP.

Thanks in advance,

~don

You are in effect correct dependant on one key factor, that's if your media players continue to download the file to tempory memory while the users stops playback or navigates away from the player location, if a user for example watches a youtube video and pauses the stream while away from the pc, the file will continue to download it's entire length to temps until complete.

Windows Media player plugin however does not buffer the stream in such a fashion. rule of thumb dictates that most flash based players audio and video download while paused.

So in effect you are right to assume that your bandwidth would be affected if using flash based players.
Many webbots now search out media playists and relink to them in search results, which is another way to lose bandwidth.

For more information about embedding windows media player click here (http://www.mioplanet.com/rsc/embed_mediaplayer.htm).
For a few examples of the various types of media streaming click here (http://www.puniksem.com/videos)

I hope this answers your question?

So other people can link to my media playlist on MySpace as well as my video, in essence leeching from my bandwidth, or is that impossible through MySpace?

My second question remains unanswered, is there a way to substitute less storage space for more bandwidth? I'm worried 100gb will not be sufficient if I have a 375mb video and 200mb (50 songs x 4mb) worth of music on my page at any given time. One play of all the songs and the video (45min) is 600mb -- although it would take close to 4hrs to play all of that in one sitting. ...and this is assuming that leeching bandwidth from bots would be impossible through MySpace linkage and FileDen personal storage.

Thanks in advance for your time to answer these questions, I just wish there was a moderator on here more often. =)

Hello,

We can do custom plans when we offer more bandwidth than the standard allocation, we cannot however reduce the amount of storage allocation to give you more bandwidth. The plans are calculated specifically so that the storage is in proportion to bandwidth - most of our costs are in bandwidth so in effect, the storage only costs us what the bandwidth does.

If you want to sort out a custom plan of some form, or talk further the best way to contact me is via this form:

Just select "Support" from the options.

Kind regards,
The File Den Team.
